Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice starts a program, in 1996, of art acquisitions, installing an Art Committee to articulate requirements and priorities and benefiting from Enterprise & Art consultancy.

As a first step, the elevator lobbies in the twentyfloor Schedeldoekshaven high-rise in The Hague receive original works on paper by as many Dutch artists. Once refurbishing activities reach the corridor where the Minister and high-level civil servants have their offices, a start is made with a collection of small art objects by a total of 43 Dutch artists. Premise here is to create a visually interesting and harmonious collection that provides room for a wide variety of techniques and styles.

The collection, installed in seven recessed showcases, comprises works in a variety of materials such as bronze, stone, ceramics, glass, wood, and synthetics. In addition, three paintings are acquired by established painters Jef Diederen and Ger Lataster. For the main lobby are acquired, in 2002, objects by Joost van Santen, Nicolas Dings, and Janine Schimkat. By now, other Ministry of Justice departments have been furnished with graphic art pieces and paintings as well.
